Vitamin D for a healthy immune system.

Vitamin D is the sunshine vitamin. It is made in our skin by sun exposure. Recently a very important study showed that babies born in the early spring after winter were more likely to develop multiple sclerosis than if born at the end of summer when vitamin D levels were highest. Multiple sclerosis, also known as MS, is a disease where the body’s immune system attacks the brain. The immune system is the body’s defense against invaders like bacteria and viruses. It also helps protect us against cancers that develop internally. We could not survive without an immune system. However sometimes this system gets misdirected and starts to attack our own organ systems. When it attacks the brain this causes MS, if it attacks the pancreas it causes juvenile diabetes in children, it can even cause asthma by attacking the lungs.

The researchers who published the article were able to explain how vitamin D correctly balances the immune system so that it attacks invading organisms and not our own bodies. This research was consistent with our own 39,000-pregnancy analysis that showed pre-eclampsia, the most common complication of pregnancy, was far more frequent in the winter than late summer. In pre-eclampsia, your body can attack elements in the placenta, and this can cause serious high blood pressure and can lead to an early delivery.

This is the reason we want pregnant women taking adequate doses of vitamin D, about 2000 to 3000 units a day. Most prenatals have only 400 to 800 units so you will need to take a vitamin D supplement of about 2000 units in addition to your prenatals to get the proper dose. This will help protect you against pre-eclampsia and balance your baby’s immune system to reduce the risk of diabetes, asthma and MS during childhood and as a young adult.
